Firms reduce emissions at Chemical Park Delfzijl through increased use of sustainable steam

Nouryon (formerly AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals) and other firms based at Chemical Park Delfzijl in the Netherlands will save up to 100,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year through the increased use of steam from waste incineration. This follows the commissioning of a third steam pipeline supplying the site by utility firm EEW Energy from Waste. The company will use the additional supply to make its salt production at the Delfzijl site more sustainable.

EEW has been supplying steam from waste incineration to the Delfzijl chemical park since 2010. The latest increase in supply follows commissioning of a third waste incineration line and the construction of a new pipeline by Groningen Seaports. The sustainable steam replaces steam generated using natural gas.

Delfzijl Site Director Johan Visser said: “Over the past 10 years, we have significantly reduced the use of natural gas by using more steam from waste and biomass. With this, we now emit 300,000 tons less CO2 per year than in 2013 – that is equivalent to the CO2 emissions of around 35,000 households.”

Groningen Seaports has made this expansion of the existing steam infrastructure possible. “This increases the attractiveness for both existing and new activities. This development also supports the sustainability of the port and industrial area in Delfzijl, “said Cas König, CEO of Groningen Seaports.

Chemical Park Delfzijl also receives sustainable steam via pipeline from an Eneco biomass plant, commissioned in 2016. Nouryon’s use of sustainable steam includes the conversion of brine into high-purity salt used in the production of chlorine and other chemicals.
